'The Smokestack of Keskkatlamaja'

It’s a smoky landmark that signals Tartu’s transformations for half a century.

From the 1960s to the 2010s, Keskkatlamaja, the Central Boiler Station, with its 90-meter-high smokestack, is a precondition to the construction of public buildings, workplaces, and housing.

And soon, new buildings, 200 apartments and 15 000 m2 of commercial space will be built where the station and its tall chimney used to stand.

The city moves on.

Extras

1

The view from my window — in 2007-2008 I lived in a micro-apartment by the Central Boiler Station (but had no district heating).

2

The first sketch — the composition's there already, but not the multitude of research, drawing and fine-tuning hours.

3

The first digital sketch — if you wonder why the foot of the smokestack looks like a nuclear wasteland, check the next photo.

4

On the spot — I started sketching this artwork when I saw how far they had gotten with demolition.
